Things You Should Not Do

  • purchase more of the food items that are easily perishable; if possible, store more of those that have longer shelf life
  • run out to the nearby shop frequently to get the necessary items
  • relying too much help from other people; you need to fight to survive for yourself and your family
  • Throw away seeds in garbage bins; save them for they might just grow into a fruit tree

You see, food shortage will not only result from natural calamities. It could also result from the economic crisis and the cost of food items increasing drastically. Plan things ahead and learn how to survive with these tips.

How to Survive the Economic Crisis and the Scarcity of Food Supply

In the midst of the current economic crisis, news has been rampant on the financial difficulties that most families try to endure and survive from. Fears of unemployment have caused a great deal of stress among families. Monthly bills have to be paid, food must be purchased and house mortgage payments must be met. Fuel prices are fluctuating, prices of the basic commodities remain uncontrolled and the economic conditions do not show any positive changes. Among other fears are the news on global warming and climate changes aside from the earthquakes and manmade disasters happening in other parts of the world.

People need to survive and in order to keep on surviving; we need to make preparations to have a consistent source of food for the family. Backyards can be used profitably by planting vegetables and fruits. There are many kinds of vegetables that can easily be propagated to have a food source for the family during a food crisis. It can also be turned into a profitable business when the harvest is more than enough for the family’s needs. You can also start thinking about constructing a chicken coop for some eggs and chicken meat. If you have your own little farm in the backyard, you can save a lot in the grocery list and at the same time, you can also help other members of the family by sharing some of the produce.

As the poor economic conditions persist, over population is another growing concern. With no measures to control over population, most developing countries have issues on hunger, poverty and deprivation. It is very disappointing to look at the pictures of malnutrition in Africa. Since the greater majority is not wealthy enough to provide for the needs of this people to alleviate their hunger, we should always make it a point to donate even little amounts to charitable institutions. Our very own children must be taught the importance of food and how its scarcity will cause hunger and deprivation.

If the season or the lack of space in your area does not allow you to have your own vegetable garden, be sure that you always maintain an emergency food supply in the cupboards. During times of emergencies brought about by unforeseen calamities or disasters, it would be very difficult to avail of food supply from the groceries or wet markets. Food scarcity is always a common result of emergencies and as a preventive measure; there must always be available supply of non-perishable food in the home. Government support and assistance cannot always be relied on and children cannot survive hunger indefinitely.

With a hand to mouth existence, it would be quite difficult to buy food stocks in bulk. Add a little extra to the grocery list every time you go out shopping for the basic necessities. One or two pieces of canned foods will not be harsh on the budget. Always be prepared with some extra food because we never know when a disaster will strike our lives.

Preparing the Basic Food Necessities for Survival in any Emergency

More recently, the world has witnessed earthquakes in different countries, tornados in North America and flooding in Southeast Asia. When these unfortunate calamities happen, people, environment and food supply are severely affected. People crowd groceries and supermarkets all trying to stock up at the last moment in order not to suffer from hunger due to the scarcity of food. High intensity earthquakes cause panic and turmoil on the streets due to the destruction wrought about in their areas. Food becomes the highest priority for individuals because food is the source of survival even in the worst disasters.

Techniques on emergency preparation always emphasized the need to have available food that will last for a few days until assistance or help arrives. It is very difficult to stock up on meat, poultry and fish because all these food items are perishable. The best kinds of food items that should be stocked up for any unforeseen emergencies are canned goods, grains, salt, sugar, flour, coffee and other farm produce that can last for a few days like potatoes, carrots, onion, garlic and other similar items. If the present budget will not allow the purchase of these food items in one bulk, the basic food necessities can be included in the grocery shopping list a little at a time. These extras can be stored in a convenient place in the cupboards which can readily be accessed by the family during an emergency situation.

Forecasts of severe weather conditions always result in food items running out quickly in the groceries. Speculation cannot be avoided since businessman sees this as an opportunity for a higher profit. It is disappointing to find that some of the most basic necessities have run out in the grocery shelves. Shortage of food supply cannot easily be attended to by the government if the severe weather conditions prevent them from providing the immediate emergency assistance. It is for these reasons why families need to have some food stocked up in order to survive and lead a normal life in spite of whatever circumstances that may befall.

If there are young children and infants in the home, always be prepared with some powdered milk and non-perishable food items. Adults can withstand hunger but children cannot; however, always be mindful of expiration dates. If the milk that has been stored is close to its expiration date, it must be consumed to be replaced with another new stock. Chocolate, biscuits and cookies which are not immediately perishable can also be kept in the cupboards to appease children during any emergencies.

Survival is one thing that people should always be mindful of. It is not only the food supply that should be prepared for but other emergency measures like first aid kits, communication devices, flashlights, batteries, transistor radios and extra set of clothing. Always be alert during any kind of emergencies and always think about safety precautions. Be properly informed on early warnings from the news on TV or the internet. Being well informed is always a critical part in emergency preparedness.

Is It True That Goldman Sachs Created The Food Crisis?

Many are blaming the current food crisis to the American culture of throwing good food away instead of feeding it to the hungry. Many are blaming the genetically modified crops designed to decrease the food crisis for the increase in the prices of basic foods. What many do not understand is why Goldman Sachs is being targeted as the main culprit to the food crisis.

It has to go back to Wall Street really. Economics is based on the basic law of demand and supply. But thanks to Goldman Sachs and their greed, the prices of food all over the world has skyrocketed to unaffordable levels resulting to a crisis that seems never ending.

Basically, it all starts with the simple and yet very basic need for food. The demand is very high, and Goldman Sachs decided that this high demand is therefore the best market to play around in. In the Futures Market, there are several players involved. One are the investors, the others are the farmers who produce the food, and finally, there are the speculators.

In the past, there were only two important players, the farmers who produced and the traders who played with the prices. This basically kept the prices low and kept the basic buy and sell patterns flowing smoothly. But Goldman Sachs only wanted to focus on one thing: the buy factor. This made the market look much like that of a stock investment, the kind where people can buy and then not sell for a long time until the price is right. This affected the market considerably, for it made the prices of food increase for the consumers who actually ate them.

Goldman Sachs did not believe in selling short, they only wanted to make more money that could only be made with the long wait. This created an imbalance and made the bankers keep buying and buying, further shooting the prices up. In due time, the increased prices attracted more investors, traders and speculators who ran after the money. Today, the prices of food have not dropped, all thanks to the new-fangled idea of Goldman Sachs to make more money out of food, no matter if the common people had nothing to eat due to the skyrocketing prices.

How To Meet Unforeseen Challenges Of Food Crisis?

All of us may have rest assured that food will never run short because there seems to be an endless supply of food or there will always be sources of food. But have you thought about the world suffering from food shortage brought on by natural calamities which destroyed the very sources of food that you relied on? That picture is bad enough but how about if a calamity strikes your own hometown and when you head to the grocery shop to buy some supplies needed by you and your family, you will be surprised to see that they ran out or they were sold out.

It is pretty obvious that the world is changing as evidenced by the climate change, the economic situation which brought undesirable effects to people with jobs and families to support. In times like these, it will be smart to prepare your own survival strategy to prepare for the worst thing that could ever happen.

When calamity strikes, there will always be a shortage of food whether at home or in shops. The next 72 hours after the calamity is a crucial time for you to survive, but you have to think beyond it because you might need to hold long enough to sustain for a month. People fight for survival, and whether you like it or not, you are not the only person who will rush to the grocery store to get some supplies when you run out. If you don’t want to deal with food crisis then your solution will be food storage.

You will need food to survive and for calamities like earthquakes, hurricanes, or even terrorist attacks, you could run out of food supply at one point or another. You can avoid this trouble by storing up food items as much as possible and store only those that have longer shelf lives. It is also important that you store dry goods like flour, salt, sugar, and grain for that matter.

There are many ways in which you can survive and the important thing to remember there is to plan ahead and prepare for rough times. You can also try to read guidebooks on survival tips to help you out.
